Barry Marina – background information and a survey to collect your views

The idea of Number 1 dock being transformed into a marina isn’t new; it goes back to at least 2010. That was when Barry was designated as a Regeneration Area by the Welsh Assembly Government.

Many of the Waterfront homes we have today are part of the overall regeneration programme.

The marina topic has come to the forefront again recently for two main reasons:

  • Associated British Ports (ABP) sharing their statutory pre-application consultation information https://www.themolebarry-pac.co.uk/

  • Vale of Glamorgan Council’s bid, supported by Alun Cairns MP, for £20 million of funding from the UK Government Levelling Up Fund to transform Barry Docks Waterfront.

It’s important to understand that ABP’s current pre-application consultation comes before the formal planning application and decision making.

The ABP website linked above has images and supporting documents covering a range of topics. BWCRA encourages everyone to look at this material to understand it and engage with the consultation process. Any feedback given now may help shape the formal planning application.

Assuming a formal planning application is made subsequently, you’ll have the opportunity to provide feedback to the planning authority at that time. Comments made now will not be ‘carried forward’. If you have views on the formal planning application, you’ll need to submit them at that time. BWCRA will highlight the opportunity for you to do this.

Meanwhile it’s important for us to understand the views of our members and the wider community. It’s also a reason why a healthy level of membership is vital; it gives us the mandate to speak on your behalf.

We have set-up a short survey to gather your views on ABP’s plan as it currently stands and to help us identify any areas you believe they (and the planners) need to address.

The survey is available clicking the 'Take Survey' box

BWCRA’s committee will be meeting soon for an initial look at the plan and to discuss the next steps in representing members’ interests.

We’ll take an initial snapshot of the survey at the end of Sunday 4th December to we can give preliminary BWCRA feedback on the plan. (ABP’s consultation closes on Friday 9th December).

If you can share your views by then this will be very helpful.

Thank you.
